Fix broken links

Fizz+Ginger searches HubSpot CMS posts and pages for broken links, including links that trigger a 301 redirect. It also lets you quickly update and fix links. This improves the user experience and helps with SEO.

The app synchronises changes immediately when you click Save but it scans pages and posts automatically on a schedule - usually every 30 minutes or so. The time of the most recent scan is shown at the top of the page.

  1. Select Posts or Pages on the Broken links menu
  2. You can use the search box to search for text in the article. This is helpful if you're trying to fix something specific, for example, a broken link identified by Google Search Console.
  3. Alternatively, you can use the By state and By code to filter the broken links. We recommend fixing 404 errors in published items first.
  4. Links are group together by post. You can click Show post to open the original item in a tab.
  5. For each broken link you can
    1. See the URL and the anchor text in context
    2. Open link to see the destination link
    3. Delete to delete the link, but keep the anchor text
    4. Update the link in the text box and then click Save to push the update to HubSpot via the API
    5. Where there is a 301 redirect, you can also Apply redirection to update the link in the text box automatically before clicking Save

There are a few important caveats - this tool is still in Beta - so be careful:

  • Sometimes, a redirection just goes to an internal link, e.g. www.articulatemarketing.com/original_url might just redirect to /new_url. If you click Apply redirection in this case and the link is not on the same site, you will end up with a broken link. Just be careful to include a full URL for external sites.
  • Sometimes other error codes appear because the destination site doesn't like the way Fizz+Ginger checks for links. Be wary of redirected URLs that look like error messages. It's best to click Open link and visit the destination page as a regular user not a bot spider and copy that URL into the text box.
  • Generally, look and think before you click save.

When you update a link, you'll see a message that the change was successful and the broken link should disappear on the next scan.
